Here it is; your long awaited Metal Slug collection for the Wii. Sure there are other formats, but for those of us that have traded in our PS2 or don't care to play this on PSP, or whatever the case, it's here on the Wii.
Of course, there are many more MS games out there, but these are the main ones. You get 1,2,X,3,4,5, and finally, 6! Why would I buy a single MS game when I can get 7 of them for only a few bucks!? Bang for the buck, MS Anthology is definitely the way to go.
Now I'm not a hardcore fan, and I didn't play MS back in the day (save for a couple of quarters in passing at the arcade). I am familiar somewhat with the franchise (despising Neo Geo games for their styling, gameplay, look, and feel) as this series was the only one that was memorable for me. Always looking for coop games I can play with family and friends, I considered picking this up.
The games here stay pretty well intact from the arcade. As a matter of fact, they are emulated (free play displays at the bottom when playing just like the arcade would do in free play mode), and for that you get all of the same sounds, looks, etc. of the originals. Notice I didn't mention control...
because on the Wii, the control is terrible. There are several control schemes available, and none of them will let you reliably shoot diagonally. Just imagine, no diagonal shooting in these games! What in the world were they thinking?
And what is to blame. The games? The controllers? I don't know but consider this; even though you can use the GameCube controllers with the titles guess what; NO ANALOG. So you're stuck with D-pad controlling and no diagonal shooting. I have been able to shoot one bullet diagonally, and that's with the machinegun while doing a sweep (i.e. aiming left and then doing a 180 degree sweep going through all directions until aiming to the right). That will get a round diagonal, but other than that, forget it.
I don't have much exposure to this series, but I have to ask of this game; what's the point? In this version, you can save ANYWHERE, and on top of that, you have unlimited continues. What's the point of the game then? Why not just have the characters never die or at least have unlimited lives? So really, you're invulnerable. This negates any part that could be challenging, and as a result there is no satisfaction to completing the games. What you get is to play through and see the various levels, and blow stuff up in essentially what is a God mode.
As for the extras, they're an insult to fans of the series. While I'm not particularly offended because I have little investment over the years with this franchise, I'd imagine that long time fans would be seriously let down. Still images of game characters and an interview with the designers that's not in video, not in audio, no, IN TEXT straight out of notepad. So really the only value here is in the games themselves, none of the extras, and the games have control and balance issues.
If you're a hardcore fan that collects this stuff or want a low impact, easy experience for short periods of time, this is your game. If you're looking for a rewarding challenge or playable controls, look elsewhere.
